What a difference a week makes

Last week, I was showing you photos of mittens and scarves and a thermometer whose mercury didn't climb above 55 the whole weekend -- and dipped as low as 28 overnight.

Today, we're basking under a blue sky with temperatures in the low 80's, out here in the foothills east of San Diego.

What a difference a week makes!

And, I hate it!

I like winter and feel cheated when summer-like weather that would delight most of the country sneaks in as it always does a few times during January and February.

While I loved the low temperatures of last weekend, my fig tree did not.  Unfortunately, the area of our front courtyard that I thought was sheltered enough for the fig tree and the enormous pot it lives in, wasn't sheltered quite enough.  After the night the temperature dipped below 30,  all the leaves turned yellow, then a couple of days later,  they fell off.  I was hoping the figs might survive, but eventually all but three of them fell off, too.  Sigh.

But look!  See that little green shoot?  I think that means the tree itself survived!  I've moved it to a more sheltered spot and next time frost threatens -- which is sure to happen again before summer gets here for real! -- I'll also throw a sheet over it for added protection.

Glenn and I brought on the summer-like weather by buying two truckloads of this:

Even though I wish the cold weather had stayed with us a little longer, I have to admit that these summery-blue skies are just gorgeous.

I hope you are enjoying whatever weather you're having this weekend!

After a few days of temps over 100 F, we awakened to a cool morning...thicker shirt needed for the early morning walk. We, dogs loved it! Crazy.....but welcome.

Hope you can enjoy a log fire again soon.

us, again...re the 87 L. 87 has become THE most important number in Blogville. It is used constantly as in 87 minutes, weeks, years....87 gazillion...etc.

We were surprised to realise that the address of our kennel was 87...here it means 8.7 kms from the start of the road and L means left side. It's for the postmen.

While the low 80's (and that nice dry SD air) sounds lovely to me, my dogs MUCH prefer the winter temps. Give them a 30 degree day anytime over summer temps.

I know what you mean, we have had some crazy temp swings in NC. I like the sunny cold, and the dogs do too.

Daisy, those cool mornings that surprise us in the middle of summer are wonderful, aren't they? Thanks for enlightening me about 87! Taryn, beasties tend to like cold weather, don't they. When Erika used to ride, it was fun to watch the trainer help the horse work some of the frisky out of itself before Erika climbed on his back. Lois, sunny cold is my preference, too, but I do enjoy a rainy day that allows me to stay inside with maintaining a fire as my only exercise!

We also had fun with the week of low temperatures in Southern CA. When we went down to the gate at dawn, to feed the geese, ducks and mud hens, they had a layer of frost on their backs. I could hardly believe what I was seeing. The black coots,(mud hens) looked like they had grey hair. So the dogs did them a favor! They ran and charged and barked and put the fear of doG in them. I figure all of the flapping and quacking and honking got the birdy blood moving. Prolly warmed them up a bit. I can almost hear the dogs laughing and high fiving each other after a good run. And LMPP, with the big ol corgi smile, seems to laugh the most.

Rebecca, it must have been colder where you live. The geese and coots at the lake where I walk on Saturday morning didn't have frost on them. It's to be very cold today in Virginia where Erika (mom to Bonnie and Bailey) lives -- high of only 28!
