Friends

I never thought that Bonnie would make a friend like this.  Even as a youngster she was always sort of a lone wolf.  She is completely alpha.  But there is something about Bailey  that is charming and goofy and I can't help but think that he's softened her a bit.

They lay here like this often.  Looking out off the deck at squirrels and birds and whatever else it is that interests them as they rest their muzzles on the bottom rail. If they haven't noticed me, like in this photo, I will stand and watch them through the door as they make synchronized ear movements and turn their heads at the same time when they spot something interesting.  Such funny creatures.  :)

Snow Day

Well it has taken me forever to get off my lazy butt and upload the pictures from last Thursday's Snow Day.  We didn't look like we were going to get anything as of Wednesday night, and then, out of the blue we had almost three inches on the ground before I left for work on Thursday morning.   Luckily I'm working the evening schedule or I wouldn't have been able to take any pictures at all since most of it evaporated by the afternoon even though the temperature never climbed out of the 20s.

The Dog-loos really lived up to their name! Thanks mom!

The pups were wild about the snow. Usually when I take them out in the clearing by my house Bonnie sniffs around and Bailey looks sort of lost and just hangs by me hoping she'll pay him some attention.  But not this day!  Bailey took off like a shot.  He rocketed around and Bonnie actually followed!  They both seemed to be feeling their oats.   We were only outside a few mins when it started snowing again... but as you can see it made no difference to the pups.

Alone

Saturday afternoon, while Pumpkin, Harry and I hung out near the fireplace, I realized Darby wasn't with us. I found her by herself in the living room.

When she notice me, she gave me a "Yes??" look, then put her head down and closed her eyes.

Maybe it was too warm near the fire, or maybe she overheard me lamenting the fact that no one ever uses the living room except Harry.

Warm and comforting

I love that quick glimpse of the inside of someone's house when I walk or drive by in the evening or early morning.  There's something warm and comforting about the soft glow of the lights.

I'll bet Harry thinks there's something warm and comforting about the patio door  -- it's keeping Darby and Pumpkin from pestering him for awhile!

MLK Day

Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge, which is power; religion gives man wisdom, which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals.”

What a difference a week makes

Last week, I was showing you photos of mittens and scarves and a thermometer whose mercury didn't climb above 55 the whole weekend -- and dipped as low as 28 overnight.

Today, we're basking under a blue sky with temperatures in the low 80's, out here in the foothills east of San Diego.

What a difference a week makes!

And, I hate it!

I like winter and feel cheated when summer-like weather that would delight most of the country sneaks in as it always does a few times during January and February.

While I loved the low temperatures of last weekend, my fig tree did not.  Unfortunately, the area of our front courtyard that I thought was sheltered enough for the fig tree and the enormous pot it lives in, wasn't sheltered quite enough.  After the night the temperature dipped below 30,  all the leaves turned yellow, then a couple of days later,  they fell off.  I was hoping the figs might survive, but eventually all but three of them fell off, too.  Sigh.

But look!  See that little green shoot?  I think that means the tree itself survived!  I've moved it to a more sheltered spot and next time frost threatens -- which is sure to happen again before summer gets here for real! -- I'll also throw a sheet over it for added protection.

Glenn and I brought on the summer-like weather by buying two truckloads of this:

Even though I wish the cold weather had stayed with us a little longer, I have to admit that these summery-blue skies are just gorgeous.

I hope you are enjoying whatever weather you're having this weekend!

a Friday ritual.

a single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week.

a simple, extraordinary, [or ordinary] moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember.

In the moment

I spent some time this weekend trying to take pictures of my friend Sharlene's cats.  I learned two things from the experience.  First, black cats are probably the hardest thing to photograph... and my dogs are pretty darn cooperative when it comes to photo taking. Cats are totally uninterested in having their pictures taken.  I suspect Bonnie and Bailey are similarly disinterested but at least they do what I tell them to.   These are some of my favorite shots this week.
