While we were gone

Glenn and I left Richmond, Virginia at 5:45 yesterday morning (which meant getting up at 2:30!) and landed here in San Diego just after 10:00 am.  Without any checked bags and with a car waiting at a nearby off-airport parking lot, we were able to get home just before 11:00 am.

While we were gone, poor house/dog sitter, Emily, had a bit of a time.   It's a long story that ended up with Emily taking Darby to the vet to have her foot bandaged because she completely tore off one of her toe-nails!  Emily said there was a good bit of blood involved and while Darby was a perfect angel in the car on the way to the vet, she was a quivering mass of apprehension while she was there.

I felt guilty because I've been thinking that Darby's toenails are too long, but the vet said they really aren't and torn toenails are not uncommon in dogs.  Especially, I'm sure, in ones like Darby who RACE around the yard at breakneck -- or toenail -- speed.

Emily said Darby licked and chewed at the bandage at first but then seemed to forget about it.  She's on an antibiotic to make sure the toe doesn't become infected and has an appointment with the vet next Monday.  It isn't hampering her in any way, as some of these photos show!

We're so grateful to have a trusted friend to watch our dogs and our house while we're gone!

Ouch! Those are quite painful. My guys have done that before, too. It does take a while to heal. Hope Darby is better asap.

Aww, poor baby. I've heard that is fairly common - and usually there's lots of blood. It's good that Darby's not bothered by the bandage! Pretty sure Rita would try to chew that thing off!

Darby looks so stoic. It's great you can go away and not worry about the dogs because you KNOW they're being taken care of. Those things seem to happen when you're away, but don't feel guilty. Looks like she's fine.

We had that happen twice to our cardigan. Once when we were on vacation also. Neither time we have no idea how he did it.
