Labor Day

Labor Day 2011 was a quiet one here, especially with Erika back home with her husband on the East Coast.  But it was a good day.  Before I show some photos of the day, I thought I'd post a little about the day we just celebrated.  Here is some information straight from the Department of Labor's website.

"Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."
Coincidentally, the first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882.  But, that first celebration was held on a Tuesday for some reason the DOJ site doesn't explain and I am too lazy to try to find out!  The second Labor Day was also held on a Tuesday, but in 1884 the grand tradition of a three-day weekend began when the first Monday in September was declared Labor Day.  The declaration was back up by various legislation that year and in the years to come.

Labor day (or Labour Day if you live in Australia or Canada) is celebrated on May 1 in many countries.  But, here in the US, we celebrated yesterday and this is what it looked like here in very southern, Southern California:
iPhone photo from an early morning walk with a friend. It wasn't as dark as it looks.
Rain! Not un-heard of in September, but rare enough.
Leaves falling already; just a few, but still...

My one and only pumpkin!

Pomegranates are ready for picking.

Love that last photo! What a gorgeous view!

And for the photo captioned: My one and only pumpkin.......I don't think that is an accurate statement if you know what I mean ;-)

Love those gorgeous views. We were going to look up Labor Day. It's celebrated in October in Australia...one of those long weekends people enjoy but don't know why.

Your pumpkin is ready for Halloween. You should do a portrait of your two Pumpkins.

gorgeous views. I don't think there is a tree more beautiful than a pomegranate one - the little leaves, the striking flowers, and the gorgeous red lantern shaped fruits!
