One Word Wednesday*

Red

* Everyone who knows me well knows that I just don't do "wordless" very well.  So, I'm going to try a twist on "Wordless Wednesday" and shoot for "One Word Wednesday."

Strangeness

By now I'm sure most (if not all) of you have heard of the Pioneer Woman.  One of the recurring themes on her blog is the strangeness of her two Basset Hounds.

Well, in my opinion, Basset Hounds have nothing on Cardigan Welsh Corgis when it comes to strange!

Here -- I'll prove it to you:
Drumsticks on a dog?
Whatever it is, it looks like its playing dead.
So strange that I can't think of anything to say.
The ears.
Hard to be much more low-slung than this.
The underside of the drumsticks.
If you didn't know it was a dog, would you know it was a dog?
She looks like a giant grub.
So, her cheeks might not flop like a Basset's, but look at that tongue. And, those cankles.
At least as strange as the ones on a Basset!
Another shot that leaves me speechless. Again, if you didn't know it was a dog, would you know it was a dog?
I rest my case.

On their level

"In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog."  ~ Edward Hoagland "Dogs and the Tug of Life"

I like that saying.   And, I'd like to think that Edward means we should try to become more like dogs by adopting some of their more noble traits such as their playful, forgiving natures and not their propensity for drinking out of toilets!

In my quest to become partly a dog, I thought I'd start by checking out how things look from Darby's and Pumpkin's level.

If nothing else, I can tell you that the floors look at lot dirtier and the dust motes are a lot more evident from down there!

Sun

For the last few months it has been dark, or almost so, by the time I got home from work.  I enjoyed building a fire in the fireplace, lighting candles on the kitchen table and spending the end of the day snuggled inside.  But, slowly, the days are getting longer and this last week there was plenty of time after I got home to spend outside in the company of my dog girls and the late afternoon sun.

Doors

Ogden Nash said "A door is what a dog is perpetually on the wrong side of."

I have a feeling Harry thinks my dog-girls are on the right side of this door:

Getting along

If dogs could talk, perhaps we’d find it just as hard to get along with them as we do people.  ~  Karel Capek 1890-1938 Czech Journalist.

Something to consider in the coming months

Any man who does not like dogs and want them about does not deserve to be in the White House. ~  Calvin Coolidge

Nothing lacking

“God...sat down for a moment when the dog was finished
in order to watch it...
and to know that it was good,
that nothing was lacking,
that it could not have been made better.” ~ Ranier Maria Rilke

Saturday Sights

1.  Crows filling the early morning air with their raucous calls.

2.  The four of us Saturday morning walking buddies (three human, one canine) and the horses that are still a fairly common sight in Lakeside, California.

 3.  Some patio sitting on a lovely, but in my opinion too chilly for bare feet and bare arms, morning.  (He didn't stay barefooted and bare-armed for long!)

4.  Oatmeal in a bowl made by my girl, a cup of coffee, and Pinterest on the iPad -- a nice way to spend an hour or so on Saturday morning.

I hope your Saturday was a good one!

5 things

 1.  Dark carpet that hides everything (except vacuum marks.)

 2. Dogs that get along (most of the time) because they know when to roll over and play dead.
 3.  Rolling travel bags that make getting from here to there a little easier.

4.  An adult daughter who still climbs into bed with her mom, and the two dogs who wedge in between.

5.  Homemade chicken lettuce wraps.  Recipe calls for bison, which is good, too.

There and here

When Laura Ingalls and Manly drove their wagon off toward the Little House on the Prairie to-be, how did Ma and Pa stand it, knowing they would probably never see their daughter again?

I'll get to visit Erika, Christian, Bonnie and Bailey again in a few months and it was still hard to leave them!  But, it was good to get home to Glenn and my dog girls.

There and here -- funny how one's heart can be in multiple places.
Nice to start the morning with dogs.
They lied.  It was colder.  During the day and at night.
Wimpy Californian.
Antique store finds.
Lost, but not lost, on Mt. Weather.  What really goes on on Mt. Weather?
They make 'em big in Maryland.
Snow.  This Californian was very pleased.
We drove into the snow, then less than an hour, right back out of it.
Sunset off Erika's deck.
Brrrr!  Cold toes.  But, they didn't seem to mind.
Home with my girls.
