Things I enjoyed over the weekend

Lazy Sunday morning
"There's that darned kitty! I should go show him who's boss."
"But, it's so nice here leaning up against The One Who Feeds Us. She needs me to keep her feet warm."

I got NOTHIN'
I've got exactly nothing to post today -- no new photos, no funny stories, no nothin'. So, I'm stealing the following poem. Darby's "Grandfather" in Maine sent it to me the other day. I love it. I don't know nothin' about copyright laws. I have a feeling I'm supposed to get Mr. Shelton's permission before posting the poem here, but since I don't profit -- monetarily, anyway -- from this blog, I'm going to take the chance that he won't ever find out and won't mind if he does.
If I Were a Dog
by Richard Shelton
I would trot down this road sniffing
on one side and then the other
peeing a little here and there
wherever I felt the urge
having a good time what the hell
saving some because it's a long road
but since I'm not a dog
I walk straight down the road
trying to get home before dark
if I were a dog and I had a master
who beat me I would run away
and go hungry and sniff around
until I found a master who loved me
I could tell by his smell and I
would lick his face so he knew
or maybe it would be a woman
I would protect her we could go
everywhere together even down this
dark road and I wouldn't run from side
to side sniffing I would always
be protecting her and I would stop
to pee only once in awhile
sometimes in the afternoon we could
go to the park and she would throw
a stick I would bring it back to her
each time I put the stick at her feet
I would say this is my heart
and she would say I will make it fly
but you must bring it back to me
I would always bring it back to her
and to no other if I were a dog

Where we've been
So we haven't been here on the blog for a couple of days because we've been having fun with my niece and her family who drove over from Phoenix. Glenn went to Comicon with them and they all came back this year talking about dressing up next year. I'm having nothing to do with THAT plan.
We had a great time with the four of them and my sister -- take-out dinner from a favorite neighborhood Italian restaurant, an early birthday party for a little miss who will be 8 years old in a few days, and lots of good conversation.

Two girls sacked out (captured by the crummy iPad camera) |
This girl really likes the boy. |
It was nice having more than two occupied chairs around our dinner table. |
Flowers cut by the birthday girl. |
They headed home very early this morning -- it's better if possible to drive through the desert in the fairly cool morning hours.
Our house is very, very quiet without them.
The dog-girls are catching up on the sleep they missed the last couple of days!

Tarantula Tuesday -- No Corgi Content
Look -- if you aren't afraid of big, hairy spiders -- at what Glenn found in our driveway when he came home yesterday evening:
They are quite common out here in the foothills outside San Diego, but we've only seen one other one in the nearly 16 years we've lived here.
This one lost a leg somehow but was able to scurry around pretty well.
They don't spin webs, but live in abandoned rodent holes or other tunnels. Because they eat things like pillbugs and other insects, we're glad they're around. But, while it's fun to see one every now and then, I'm glad they usually keep to themselves! Glenn used a broom to gently help this one off the driveway into the bushes (and away from the garage door!)

Not much to report
The weekend passed without much to report from here in very southern, Southern California. The weather has been hot and muggy. Generally, mugginess is not something we Southern Californian's experience and we generally do not enjoy it when we do. But, weather that feels muggy usually produces pretty sunrises and sunsets. And sunrises and sunsets are nearly all my camera captured this weekend.
