Oh! How I wish they could understand "Don't play on the stairs!"
I hold my breath when they race up and down and tackle each other.
I only had one child and she was a girl. Maybe this is what it's like to have boys!?

Who needs Jimmy Carter?
Who needs Jimmy Carter?
Forget the United Nations,
and their peace keeping missions.
Maybe what the world needs now isn't love, sweet, love.
Maybe all we need is freeze dried liver treats.
If the treats could bring Darby and Harry together in peace for a few minutes this morning, maybe they'd work in the Middle East, too!
(Darby was the one interested in the dirty sock, not Harry. I know Harry would want me to point that out.)

No Photos
I don't have any new photos to share, but I do have to comment that one day after the major abdominal surgery I had 20 years ago I sure did not feel like jumping into the air, running up (and down) two flights of stairs and racing from one side of the backyard to the other.
But Darby felt like doing all those things and more when I got home from work this afternoon--just one day after her major abdominal surgery!
Guess they make dogs different!

Poor Darby!
Poor Darby!
She was spayed today (Wednesday, the 26th.)
When we got home, she wobbled out to the backyard for a potty break, wobbled back in, then proceeded to follow me from room to room--laying down if I stopped, then lumbering to her feet when I moved.
So, I lead her to her crate where she laid down with a sigh.
When I came back with my phone to take a photo, she looked up -- pitifully:
then went back to sleep:
I'm not sure she will be able to make it up the stairs tonight; if not, I'll sleep on the sofa downstairs with her.
Poor baby!

Maybe it's because she is from Arkansas

Yellow Ball
The big blue ball that Kathy brought for Darby is gone. Deflated after Darby somehow managed to sink a tooth in it.
But the tougher, yellow ball is still around.
Darby has really gotten into retrieving tennis balls (and an empty shampoo bottle...), but she hasn't given up herding the big yellow ball around the yard.
Another great photo by Krysten.

Spinning
Darby isn't a cuddly dog. But, she follows me from room to room and settles down whenever I do. When I am working (playing) at the computer she often snuggles in behind me between the wall and my spinning wheel and sometimes rests her head on the treadle. I've tried to snap a picture of her several times and haven't succeeded.
Erika managed to get one today:
All together now: "Awwwwwwwww!"

New Puppy Class
Darby went to a new puppy class yesterday--same place, same teacher, different puppies.
What a surprise to see another cardigan come walking in--a too-cute-for-words blue about nine weeks old.
It was an even bigger surprise to discover that the puppy, River, is from Coedwig's recent litter of 12!
It will be fun to get to know River and his humans.
Darby wasn't quite as shy with the puppies this time. During free play she did allow herself to get backed into a corner by a tiny little Airedale named Lewis ("with a W") and the two of them stood there for quite awhile barking back and forth at each other. But a little later, she actually ventured into the center of the room!
I intended to take photos--Erika is home for the weekend and came along with me to class--but I forgot. So, this photo of Darby and the ball will have to do:

Thunder
See those drops on the ground around Darby and her new BFF the tennis ball?
That is rain!
Rain in August in the San Diego area (with the exception of the mountains just to the east of us) is pretty darned rare. We even had thunder and lightning yesterday!
My brother loved thunder and lightning storms and would stand on his porch watching them. The coastal North Carolina town where he and his wife lived gave him lots of opportunity to see storms.
My brother died a little more than a week ago--in the middle of a huge thunder and lightning storm the likes of which I, who have lived 52 of my 56 years in San Diego, have never seen.
I like to think he is up there giving us a little parting shot of thunder and lightning before settling into his place in heaven.

Outside
Darby spent the afternoon outside--alone--for the first time.
Krysten let her out at 12:30, then left her outside.
I held my breath as I came in the back door at 4:30.
She was waiting at the patio door (wish I had thought to have my camera ready!)
The only thing that looked out of place was the screen door that she knocked off the tracks. I wouldn't be surprised if she jumped on the screen because Harry was sitting inside teasing her!
Big day for my little--OK, not so little--pup!

I've been gone
I've been gone for awhile and Darby has been here with Glenn.
I think Darby is fine, but Glenn is a little worse for wear.
Getting up at 5:00am is not his cup of tea.
I was gone for nearly a week and Darby grew during that time. Photos won't show the difference, but I sure can tell.
Hopefully I'll have a real post ready tomorrow.

Darby and Harry
Darby and Harry are getting together a lot. Notice I didn't say they are necessarily getting along-- only that they are getting together.
Harry swats at Darby regularly now--but, so far, always with claws retracted.
Poor Harry. If Darby manages to catch him,
...she doesn't bite him, but she does slime him!
P.S. Do NOT look at Darby's toenails. I have tried and tried to trim them. Glenn won't hold her for me and holding her on her back between my legs just isn't working. It's off to the groomer next weekend.
